News of the 'Gate

29/5/00  Weekend Washout

The players were again left kicking their heels as the second Bank Holiday 'double' weekender of the season was washed out.  The rain denied Neil Stockton the chance to meet up again with 'cap-throwing' John Morton at Gt Smeaton but probably saved us from defeat against resurgent Hutton Rudby though it would be interesting to see how the University Boys would cope on our pitch.

The coming weekend sees the start of our Gjers cup campaign and also the next round of the Village Cup - weather permitting!

15/5/00  Gate Set Out on Road to Lord's

Chop Gate set out on their unlikely campaign to reach crickets HQ in the National Village Championship against Medomsley CC from Durham.  Check out 'The Village Cup' page for details.

9/5/00  Gate Gets Lord's Seal of Approval

Chop Gate CC were honoured today by a personal message from none other than Julian Goode, the editor of the official English Cricket Board and MCC websites at Lords' (text below).  The pioneering Chop Gate website has proved popular with those in the know at the Headquarters of Cricket, in particular our innovative face-warping page has provided some mirth in the often stat-filled world of internet cricket.  Look out for more interesting developments soon and, er, we'll try to fix the Guestbook...sorry.

Hello Neil.

Will certainly add a link. Please can you link back to www.lords.org - logo attached for you if you want to use it.   Nice site - particularly like Warpface!!! Did try and leave a message in your guestbook but kept getting an error:

Looks a lovely place to play cricket - if not very flat!

Best wishes

We are, however, delighted to include a link to the thoroughly excellent website, Julian, and "Ta" for the pic!  Remember though, Lords may have a more famous 'slope' than us but ours is steeper.

4/5/00  New Signing for the 'Gate

Chop Gate representatives have been in secret negotiations with an as yet un-named player from last seasons table-toppers Gt Broughton.  The player, said to be 'out of contract' with the defending Champions and therefore available on a free transfer is, according to club captain John Holmes, "raring to go and may play this Saturday" (pitch permitting).

4/5/00  National Village Championship

We are once again featuring in the national village cup competition!  Check out this site to marvel at our gloriously unhindered progress to the Durham, Cleveland, Tyne & Wear regional semi-finals last year or check out this years draw.  Did anyone know we were supposed to be playing Medomsley CC at home on the 14th May?  Now there's some news for you!  Click 'here' to go to site.

4/5/00  The Web Spreads Ever Wider

The Chop Gate website has created a clamour of interest in the usually technophobic world of Langbaurgh League cricket.  Our own erstwhile skipper has done a one-day course and now thinks Web authoring is "a piece of piss".  Let's all look forward to the Ginger Grinder Homepage!

One of our reporters has also scooped the story that Moneybags Maltby CC also have designs on the Net.  A comment attributed to Martin Barber (MMCC's Captain) alleges that they have "commissioned" their own site.  Well, we at the 'Gate welcome a bit of competition, so come on Maltby - let's 'ave it!

1/5/00 Great Offer to Other Langbaurgh League Clubs

We, the big-hearted people at CGCC Web, would like to offer other League clubs your own page on our website, well it's easier than doing your own isn't it?  E-mail us with (brief) news, match reports or other such stuff and we'll put it up for you FREE!  Can't say fairer than that.

Remember, CGCC Web - the only place for Langbaurgh League cricket online!!!  Click 'Contacts' to e-mail the 'Gate.

30/4/00 First Day Washout

As predicted below, the first day of the new season started like so many lately - with a washout.  Hopes of play on Monday have been 'dampened' by reports of a "90% certainty that the game will be off" unless the weather improves dramatically.  Though the weather seems set fair for Sunday and Monday it remains to be seem if this will be enough.

26/4/00 Pre-season Pitch Reports (see 'Around the Grounds' for pictures)

With the season rapidly bearing down on us we sent our 'Pitch Inspection Team' on a 101 mile whistle-stop odyssey around the 14 Langbaurgh League grounds.  This ranged from seeing rabbits frolicking at the Leagues' only urban ground, Stafford Place, rescuing a lamb at Thimbleby, watching ducks splash about on the Broughton outfield, hearing the rattle of Mr Bowjangles jewelry at Gt Smeaton and spotting an outbreak of haute couture amongst lambs in Kildale to finding the Crathorne Arms shut when in need of refreshments and getting soaked in a downpour at the 'Gate.  The mission was to report back on the chances of getting a game in this coming weekend though recent storms may make the findings academic.

Stafford Rabbits, literally.  Lamb Rescue (Thimbleby) Broughton Ducks - more the merrier! Versace Sheep (Kildale)

Signs of early cricketing life were spotted at Maltby with a number of 'faces' in cricket training attire attending to pavilion tidying matters and at Hutton Rudby were a couple of spindly youths were spied having a net.

Saturday 29th April and Monday 1st May see the following matches scheduled, let's rate their chances...

Home Club Versus State of Pitch Play Rating
Chop Gate Kildale The weather has been very unkind in the run up to the season.  Saturated outfield and square. 0/10
Thimbleby  Maltby Surprisingly good.  A bit of good weather should be all that's needed.  Slow'n'low. 6/10
Swainby Kirby Sigston Very wet, may need a little too much attention. 4/10
Scruton  Crathorne Still very wet, it's going to take some luck to get this one on. 3/10
East Harlsey Gt Broughton Looking quite good.  A good draining pitch. 6/10
Stafford Place Gt Smeaton Very wet outfield, the damage may already have been done. 2/10
Ingleby Greenhow Hutton Rudby Absolutely soaking.  Little chance of improvement. 1/10
Maltby Chop Gate Looking good, covers may save this one (only joking John). 5/10
Kirby Sigston Thimbleby  Rarely lose a game to the weather up here. 6/10
Crathorne Swainby A good pitch and outfield.  Definite possibilities here. 7/10
Gt Broughton Scruton  Soaking outfield, particularly in bottom corner. 3/10
Gt Smeaton East Harlsey Always wet early on.  Conditions will be difficult if the game goes ahead. 4/10
Kildale Ingleby Greenhow Damp outfield but square looked okay.  Slow'n'low if play starts. 5/10
Hutton Rudby Stafford Place Pitch in reasonable condition given the weather.  Chances not high though. 4/10

18/4/00 Langbaurgh Match-Fixing Scandal

In the wake of the shock news that South African skipper Hansie Cronje has been 'less than honest' and Chris Lewis' allegations that England players are paid to be rubbish comes a scandal that will send fresh shock waves through the game.

We have just had word that the Langbaurgh League Management Committee are launching an enquiry into the result of the Chop Gate versus Hutton Rudby home match from 1997.  Following fragments of a taped telephone
conversation mentioning 12 pints of Carlsberg Export,  the Committee is interested to know how a team chasing 72 to win can be 52 for 0 and 70 all out including one batsman laying in the wicket so he can be given out LBW.  Dave Hill's cricketing reputation and career could be tarnished forever.

Expect more match-fixing allegations as the season progresses, particularly after we play Kirby Sigston or Gt Broughton.

Swainby Re-admitted Shock

The League has been convulsed with laughter since Glen Shinwells' radical rescue package for Swainby CC proved successful.  Rumour has it that Glen has shipped in a boatload of red-faced, albino Vikings of dubious cricketing ability to pad out the side.  Should feel right at home, eh, Shinners!

Swainby left the League a club short last year, the final straw proved to be when the 'Gate shot 'em out for 29 (see 'Captains Log' for details).  However, it is pleasing to see the League back up to it's full compliment after rejecting the overtures of Skelton Castle.  Good Luck Swainby!

New Fixtures

As the new season approaches the excitement is starting to build.  We have the new league fixtures for CGCC and this site is the only place you can find the fixtures out on-line.  Click 'Fixtures & Results - 2000'
