18/9/00 Broughton Snatch Defeat From Jaws of Victory As Maltby Sneak Home Much to the amusement of everyone who lives beyond the boundaries of Broughton and Kirby the much-vaunted, in their minds at any rate, team that had dominated the top spot since early June choked at the vital moment and allowed rivals Maltby to pip them at the post. It is difficult to have any sympathy with Broughton whose behaviour as a team is amongst the worst I have ever experienced. While we at the Gate may not be best pleased that those Flash Harry's down at Moneybags Maltby have won the Title, they are generally a likeable enough bunch whose blend of old-timers and younger lads have really done the business this year. On to the matches, we have only sketchy details but the story goes something like this...Broughton dismiss Stafford for 91 and must have been chortling into their teas at the half-way point...Maltby recover from 30/5 against second bottom Swainby thanks to an incredible 70 from veteran John Forth to post over 200...Broughtons usually consistant batting line-up crumbles as the pressure of scoring less than 100 to win the League becomes too much and are finally all out for just over 70...Swainby, as expected, fail to rack up the required runs and that was that - Game Over for another year. All other matches were irrelevant. THE FINAL LEAGUE TABLE - 2000
What a time to go on holiday! I left with the League title seemingly assured to Broughton and return to see that Maltby have tied things up at the top. Going into the last weekend of the season both teams were neck and neck and this was how it remained as both secured expected victories over teams from the lower reaches. Maltby racked up an impressive 232/3 against Scruton with the Taxman and Close both reaching 50's. Broughton restricted Greenhow to 108/7 and were rarely in trouble, Smith leading the way with 65no. The last games of the season see Broughton travel to the inconsistant Stafford Place, who could muster only 35 against Crathorne yesterday, and Maltby taking a trip to 2nd bottom Swainby. Maltby would seem the more likely winners but who can tell?
Crathorne (36/3) beat Stafford Place (35) by 7 wickets. Broughton (109/4) beat Ingleby Greenhow (108/7) by 6 wickets. Kildale (86/7) beat Thimbleby (82) by 3 wickets. Hutton Rudby (103) lost to Great Smeaton (143/7) by 40 runs. Kirby Sigston (54) lost to East Harlsey (56/4) by 6 wickets. Maltby (232/3) beat Scruton (94) by 138 runs. Chop Gate (172/9) beat Swainby (90) by 82 runs. 19/8/00 Maltby Fail To Cash In With only 6 games remaining title-challengers Maltby failed to close the gap on Broughton, losing to 3rd bottom Smeaton by 4 wickets as Broughton recovered from recent wobbles to beat Sigston. Hutton held on to 3rd spot by recovering from a poor start to beat the Gate and Stafford also won to remain in 4th. At the bottom, it was another poor weekend for Ingleby and Swainby who both crashed to defeats by over 100 runs each.
Stafford Place (205/6) beat Swainby (91) by 114 runs. Broughton (156/4) beat Kirby Sigston (154/6) by 4 wickets. Gt. Smeaton (152/6) beat Maltby (149) by 4 wickets. East Harlsey (171/2) beat Scruton (167/8) by 8 wickets. Crathorne (119) lost to Kildale (170/9) by 51 runs. Hutton Rudby (114/9) beat Chop Gate (84) by 30 runs. Ingleby Greenhow (76) lost to Thimbleby (180/7) by 104 runs. 12/8/00 Broughton Crash To Rivals Moneybags Maltby pulled off a surprise result with an excellent win over top team Broughton. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall in the Broughton dressing room as they crashed to an 3 wicket defeat despite an unbeaten 106 from Andre White, Maltby's batsmen contributed steadily all the way through the innings with Andy Morrow top-scoring with 49. At the bottom, Greenhow improved their position, leapfrogging Swainby with a 58 run win. Harlsey kept up their good run with a 7 wicket win over Kildale, Mason being the major contributor with 92no, there were also win for the other top teams, Hutton and Stafford.
Kildale (171/7) lost to East Harlsey (175/3) by 7 wickets. Thimbleby (112) lost to Hutton Rudby (156) by 44 runs. Swainby (78) lost to Ingleby Greenhow (136/9) by 58 runs. Scruton (104) lost to Stafford Place (108/4) by 6 wickets. Chop Gate (84/3) beat Gt Smeaton (81) by 7 wickets. Maltby (211/7) beat Broughton (208/8) by 3 wickets. Kirby Sigston (129/7) lost to Crathorne (135/6) by 4 wickets. 5/8/00 Maltby Maintain Pressure Maltby kept up the pressure on Broughton at the top of the table as they comfortably beat Kirby Sigston by 40 runs with Hutchinson nipping in with some important early wickets to make up for his duck in the home sides innings. Broughton sailed home by 8 wickets against lowly Thimbleby and Harlsey kept up their good run squeezing home by 5 runs against bottom of the table Greenhow. Swainby eased their 'wooden-spoon' fears with a 4 wicket win over fellow strugglers Smeaton.
Scruton (93) lost to Hutton Rudby (96/5) by 5 wickets. Maltby (154/8) beat Kirby Sigston (114) by 40 runs. Thimbleby (188/6) lost to Broughton (189/2) by 8 wickets. Swainby (161/6) beat Smeaton (157/5) by 4 wickets. Chop Gate (166/7) lost to Crathorne (168/3) by 7 wickets. Kildale (159/8) lost to Stafford Place (160/6) by 4 wickets. East Harlsey (140/5) beat Ingleby Greenhow (136/8) by 4 runs. East Harlsey openers Stuart Hodgson (87no) and Pete Mason (33no) cruised past Smeatons target of 122 without losing a wicket to lift them to 6th in the table. Broughton maintained their lead as Scruton collapsed, losing their last 7 wickets for 22. Hutton Rudby's title challenge appears to be fading as they lost narrowly to Stafford Place but Maltby continue to chase with a good win away at the Gate, Taxman Barber (73) and Paul Hutchinson (57) the chief culprits. At the bottom, Swainby lost narrowly to Crathorne and Greenhow lost by a wider margin to Kildale.
Crathorne (132/9) beat Swainby (131/9) by 1 wicket. East Harlsey (123/0) beat Gt. Smeaton (122/7) by 10 wickets. Stafford Place (155/9) beat Hutton Rudby (155) by 10 runs. Chop Gate (160) lost to Maltby (206/5) by 46 runs. Ingleby Greenhow (131) lost to Kildale (172/8) by 41 runs. Scruton (116) lost to Gt. Broughton (144/8) by 28 runs. Thimbleby (165/5) beat Kirby Sigston (164/7) by 5 wickets. Dave Metcalf produced a swash-buckling innings reaching 50 of only 22 balls at the top of the order as Stafford Place raced home by 9 wickets against Smeaton. Moneybags and Hutton maintain their challenges at the top with a comfortable wins and Sigston are also on the up as surprise outsiders with another big win, Kendrew taking 8/34 against Swainby. A fourth wicket partnership of 93 between Mark Lane and Neil Stockton wasn't enough to save the Gate against the Farmers in a tight finish.
Gt. Smeaton (154/4) lost to Stafford Place (158/1) by 9 wickets. Hutton Rudby (151/6) beat Ingleby Greenhow (63) by 88 runs. Maltby (115/2) beat Thimbleby (113/9) by 8 wickets. Kildale (160/6) beat Chop Gate (157) by 3 runs. Kirby Sigston (114/1) beat Swainby (113) by 9 wickets. Crathorne v Scruton - ground unfit, no result. 8/7/00 Hutton Unhinged by Farmers Huttons grip on Broughtons' coat-tails was weakened slightly as the season reached it's halfway point. Broughton secured another big win by nine wickets, Mike Cook (94no) and Stephen Tait (89no) the chief contributors, but Hutton slipped up against Kildale as Doughty had an excellent day making 76 and then taking 5/46, Sonley taking the other 5 wickets. Top scorers of the day were Maltby, TAXing Swainby for 273 with veterans John Forth in fine form for 55 and Ray Rix ending with 6/35 in a comfortable win. Crathorne's game with Harlsey fell victim to the weather but all other matches were completed, Greenhow are now rooted to the bottom by 4 points.
Gt. Broughton (187/1) beat Stafford Place (185/7) by 9 wickets. Crathorne (163/7), East Harlsey (77/4) - match abandoned as a draw. Chop Gate (149/8) beat Thimbleby (147) by 2 runs. Ingleby Greenhow (97/9) lost to Gt. Smeaton (100/7) by 3 wickets. Maltby (273/9) beat Swainby (117) by 156 runs. Kirby Sigston (162) beat Scruton (126) by 36 runs. Hutton Rudby (108) lost to Kildale (146/7) by 38 runs. Maltby 'TAX'ed themselves to the limit to keep in touch with the leaders as they only just scraped past Scrutons' feeble total in a game where none of the batsmen distinguished themselves, Dave Eland the pick of the bowlers with 6/21. Hutton also kept up the pressure on Broughton with a relatively routine win over Smeaton with the Bailey brothers taking all nine wickets to fall between them. At the bottom, Swainby emerged victorious against the Gate and Kildale slipped deeper into the mire with defeat by Thimbleby, M. Dennis the major contributor with 62. Stafford appear to be re-finding their form with a nine wicket win over Crathorne, Dave Metcalf outstanding with 88no.
Scruton (65) lost to Maltby (67/7) by 3 wickets. Swainby (94/4) beat Chop Gate (92) by 6 wickets. Gt. Smeaton (102/9) lost to Hutton Rudby (105/6) by 4 wickets. East Harlsey (129/9) lost to Kirby Sigston (172/6) by 43 runs. Stafford Place (144/1) beat Crathorne (141/9) by 9 wickets. Kildale (135/9) lost to Thimbleby (136/4) by 6 wickets. Hutton struggled to keep pace with Broughton in a clash of the top two, with only Hereford (50) and Bailey Jr (39) making scores. Broughton took their time in reaching the total but did so with 7 wickets to spare. Maltby also slipped up relinquishing 3rd spot to Harlsey, Willey being the pick of the bowlers with 6/47. Stafford continue to slide, losing again this time to Sigston with John Thommo chipping in with 54 to set up the win. Scruton battled hard despite fielding an under-strength side against Chop Gate, also suffering absenses and injuries, Greensit top scoring with 50 but Mark Lane defied a groin injury picked up while bowling to hit 43no with the 'aid' of a runner.
Scruton (121/7) lost to Chop Gate (122/3) by 7 wickets. Crathorne (204/3) beat Ingleby Greenhow (98) by 106 runs. Kildale (147) lost to Gt. Smeaton (150/4) by 6 wickets. Maltby (98) lost to East Harlsey (100/3) by 7 wickets. Hutton Rudby (155/8) lost to Gt. Broughton (158/3) by 7 wickets. Kirby Sigston (153/6) beat Stafford Place (152/5) by 4 wickets. 17/6/00 Incredulity Reigns as Swainby Do It Again Would you Adam and Eve it! After showing all the promise of a Blackpool donkey in the Grand National, Swainby have gone and won for the second week running - this weeks 'Hang Your Head in Shame' Award goes to Kildale. The ruddy-cheeked viking, Glen Shimwell, did the damage with 8 (count 'em) wickets against the farmers, none of whom covered themselves in glory, the Kerr twins sealed things with competent performances with the bat. Elsewhere, in a day for batting second, Broughton and Hutton continued to set the pace with Maltby snapping at their heals, Morrow again in the runs as Moneybags won their 'local derby' with Stafford. Mark Lane continued his fine batting form for the Gate with 59 but it wasn't enough to secure a win.
East Harlsey (146/7) beat Chop Gate (145/6) by 3 wickets. Swainby (77/4) beat Kildale (76) by 6 wickets. Scruton (133/2) beat Thimbleby (132) by 8 wickets. Stafford Place (140/7) lost to Maltby (144/3) by 7 wickets. Hutton Rudby (186/5) beat Crathorne (127/9) by 59 runs. Gt. Smeaton (171/8) lost to Gt. Broughton (172/2) by 8 wickets. 10/6/00 Scruton Embarrassed in Weekend of Surprises The Leagues last unbeaten records tumbled on Saturday as Hutton Rudby stumbled at Sigston and Stafford Place were whipped by the Gate. Broughton regained joint leadership with a comfortable win at Kildale. Thimbleby would have reckoned themselves in with a chance against Harlsey after posting over 160 but that was before Dave Willey (102no) and veteran Stuart Hodgson (50no) reached the target without losing a wicket. Biggest laugh of the day, however, was reserved for Scruton who did what the rest of the League had been worried about - being the first team to lose to Swainby.
Chop Gate (152/5) beat Stafford Place (49) by 103 runs. Swainby (58/3) beat Scruton (56) by 7 wickets. Thimbleby (161/5) lost to East Harlsey (164/0) by 10 wickets. Crathorne (120/9) beat Gt Smeaton (96) by 24 runs. Kirby Sigston (128/6) beat Hutton Rudby (120) by 8 runs. Kildale (108) lost to Gt Broughton (155/7) by 47 runs. Maltby (175/6) beat Ingleby Greenhow (118) by 57 runs. I hope I'm not jumping the gun like I did with some of last Monday's matches by saying there is "No Chance!" of a game being played in the league this weekend. Assuming this is the case the table is as follows...
No matches possible this weekend. Much amusement has been caused in the CGCC Web office at the comprehensive defeat of Broughton by Maltby in one of the few games played on Saturday. We can just imagine the air turning blue as they racked up nearly 5 an over and then watched as their bowling attack turned powder-puff on their own patch, Simon Close (95no) and Andy Morrow (73) doing the damage. Hutton Rudby seized the opportunity to go clear at the top with a routine win while at the bottom Ingleby Greenhow secured their first win and cemented Swainbys' position as League 'Whipping-Boys'. Monday (amazingly) saw some games defy the weather with the bottom two losing again and Stafford Place creeping up on the rails to go second. Maltby showed 'flash in the pan' tendencies by undoing Saturdays good work by caving in at Smeaton.
Sat. 27/5/00 Hutton Rudby (78/1) beat Thimbleby (74) by 9 wickets. Ingleby Greenhow (160/7) beat Swainby (46) by 114 runs. East Harlsey (98/8) lost to Kildale (99/4) by 6 wickets. Broughton (194/7) lost to Maltby (196/2) by 8 wickets. Mon. 29/5/00 Thimbleby (174) beat Ingleby Greenhow (122) Swainby (55) lost to Stafford Place (56/3) by 7 wickets. Gt. Smeaton (124/6) beat Maltby (65) by 59 runs. All other games for Saturday and Monday - no result. 20/5/00 Broughton and Hutton Set The Pace Early pacesetters, the rural farmers of Broughton and the University boys of Hutton Rudby, both came through the weekends games with their title credentials intact. Hutton racked up 227 all out against struggling Swainby while Broughton did us over (see match report for gory details). Crathorne continue to wobble with defeat following a horrendous collapse at Moneybags Maltby while unlikely Thimbleby also topped 200 in a thumping win over Smeaton.
Chop Gate (47) lost to Gt Broughton (48/0) by 10 wickets. Scruton (35/2) beat Swainby (33). Swainby (52) lost to Hutton Rudby (227) by 175 runs. Thimbleby (209/9) beat Gt Smeaton (98) by 114 runs. Kildale (107/9) lost to Kirby Sigston (161/6) by 54 runs. Maltby (170) beat Crathorne (154) by 16 runs. East Harlsey lost to Stafford Place. 13/5/00 - The League Takes Shape The League began to take on a familiar look as Broughton went top after another easy win but Hutton Rudby are emerging as serious title contenders and, along with Stafford Place, remain unbeaten. The middle of the table remains tight with a clutch of seven clubs on 8 points. Swainby slumped to bottom after taking a battering for the second week running eclipsing last weeks poor effort by reaching only 27 this time round.
Results: Crathorne (111) lost to Chop Gate (112/3) by 7 wickets. Gt Broughton (82/1) beat Thimbleby (80) by 9 wickets. Hutton Rudby (118/3) beat Scruton (117) by 7 wickets. Stafford Place (161/9) beat Kildale (101) by 60 runs. Ingleby Greenhow (135/7) lost to East Harlsey (136/1) by 9 wickets. Kirby Sigston (97) lost to Maltby (143/9) by 46 runs. Gt Smeaton (28/0) beat Swainby (27) by 10 wickets. A full programme of matches was possible for the first time this season. Along with the usual early season howlers, Swainby - 29 all out, Ingleby Greenhow 46 all out, were some sterling efforts including an unbeaten 100 by some bloke from Hutton Rudby in a 200+ total and Kildale posted 183. Thimbleby are knocked off the top spot and now languish in a more familiar 8th place.
Results: Chop Gate 120/7 lost to Kirby Sigston 121/9 by 1 wicket. Scruton (104) beat Gt Smeaton (93) by 11 runs. Swainby (29) lost to Gt Broughton (30/4) by 6 wickets. Thimbleby (90/9) lost to Crathorne (92/5) by 5 wickets. Ingleby Greenhow (46) lost to Stafford Place (50/0) by 10 wickets. Kildale (183/6) beat Maltby (83) by 100 runs. East Harlsey (120/9) lost to Hutton Rudby (217/5) by 97 runs. With virtually all this weekends matches rained off, Thimbleby have stolen a march on the rest of the League by winning the only fixture to take place. Our Pitch Inspectors again prove their ability and local knowledge by giving this fixture a 6/10 play rating on their pre-season tour.
