2nd Round: 2/8/00 - Skelton Castle (Stokesley) Chop Gate (117/3) beat Skelton Castle (116/7) by 1 run. Mark Lane and Kingsley McGarigle provided the platform for a dramatic victory for the 10-man Gate with an opening partnership of 57 with Lane going on to an unbeaten 50. Despite dropping a number of catches, the main culprit being stand-in keeper Mark Grace, the Gate bowlers, Stockton and Tait, restrained the opposing batsmen leaving 8 required from the final over. With 4 required from the final ball Chris Lane provided a good throw to run out the batsman going for the third run that would have tied the game providing an excellent result and setting up a re-match with Kildale in the Semi's. 1st Round: 18/7/00 - Rievaulx (h) Chop Gate (117/7) beat Rievaulx (98). 1st Round: 14/7/00 - Rievaulx (h) Match abandoned (Rain) - Rievaulx 116/6, Chop Gate 35/2. To be re-arranged. 1st Round: 16/6/00 - East Harlsey (a) East Harlsey (123/6) beat Chop Gate (89/6) by 34 runs. 9/6/00 - Lealholm Chop Gate (57) lost to Lealholm (58/2) by 8 wickets. Chop Gate put up a miserable performance in what is never our favourite cup competition but one which has provided some success over the years. The tone was set from the first ball received by Mark Lane, backing away to leg and pointlessly wafting his bat at the ball. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals and it was a relief when the Lealholm batsmen put us out of our misery, or so we thought. On arrival at the pub (Named and Shamed - The Eskdale) we were confronted by 'Fosters' or an even weaker 'lager', Green Label. We left grateful that we wouldn't have to go back for another year. Bob Lowther Trophy Final: 25/7/00 - Kildale (Ingleby Greenhow) Kildale (130/7) beat Chop Gate (92/9) by 38 runs. Kildale Cup Curse Strikes Again! For the third time in as many years Kildale have inflicted cup-final heartbreak on the Gate. They always play the same tactics, winning the toss, batting and rattling up a score too big for us to chase. Whatever we try the outcome always seems to be the same. This time, Mark Lane and Max Cook opened the bowling and by the time the first wicket fell to Stockton, Kildales' openers Corcoran (41) and Pierson (31) had rattled up 79 from 10 overs. The introduction of Mike Tait, who produced an excellent spell of 5 for 21 from 6 overs, brought some sanity to proceedings but the horse had well and truly bolted. The final total of 130 was about 20 more than was realistically chaseable as the light faded rapidly. Chop Gate got off to a slow start as Kildale ringed the boundary, opener Lane severely hampered by a groin injury picked up while bowling was a shadow of his usual self. Wickets fell at short intervals as the batsmen tried to up the rate and in near total darkness the last wicket pair of Hill and Healey put on 23 to add some respectability to the total but it wasn't enough. We were left crying into our beers once again. Semi-Final: 24/7/00 - Scruton (h) Chop Gate (94/5) beat Scruton (93/7) by 5 wickets. Round 1: 27/6/00 - Swainby (h) Chop Gate (153/3) beat Swainby. Ideson Cup - Gt. Broughton Semi-Final: 16/7/00 Gt Broughton Broughton (96/4) beat Chop Gate (72/5). Being paired with the favourites was not the draw we were looking for and Broughton showed the strength of their side compiling a formidable total. In reply, Chop Gate were always up against it but a good partnership between Lane and Jimmy Scott kept us in the hunt. When both fell in quick succession the game was effectively up. Round 2: 16/7/00 Maltby Maltby (79/5) lost to Chop Gate (80/0). A good bowling performance restricted Moneybags to a very getable total in this 6-a-side knockabout. Mark Lane (39no) and Neil Stockton (32no) combined to reach the total with 4 balls of the 8 overs remaining. Round 1: 9/7/00 Scruton - Scruton conceded.
