18/9/00 Broughton Snatch Defeat From Jaws of Victory As Maltby Sneak Home Much to the amusement of everyone who lives beyond the boundaries of Broughton and Kirby the much-vaunted, in their minds at any rate, team that had dominated the top spot since early June choked at the vital moment and allowed rivals Maltby to pip them at the post. It is difficult to have any sympathy with Broughton whose behaviour as a team is amongst the worst I have ever experienced. While we at the Gate may not be best pleased that those Flash Harry's down at Moneybags Maltby have won the Title, they are generally a likeable enough bunch whose blend of old-timers and younger lads have really done the business this year. On to the matches, we have only sketchy details but the story goes something like this...Broughton dismiss Stafford for 91 and must have been chortling into their teas at the half-way point...Maltby recover from 30/5 against second bottom Swainby thanks to an incredible 70 from veteran all-rounder John Forth to post over 200...Broughtons usually consistant batting line-up crumbles as the pressure of scoring less than 100 to win the League becomes too much and are finally all out for just over 70...Swainby, as expected, fail to rack up the required runs and that was that - Game Over for another year.
