THE AUTHOR

Never a gifted cricketer, it has always been a struggle.  My batting has been described as ‘dour’.  The phrase ‘like watching paint dry’ has been frequently used.  Not the quick drying variety I might add.  My supporters might call my batting ‘gritty’, however,  I think ‘boring’ is probably the most accurate description.  I have never liked giving my wicket away and I have always felt persecuted from modelling myself on the great Sir Geoffrey Boycott (a childhood hero).  Antics in French hotel rooms excluded (allegedly).

It is written in folklore that I once hit a six but I have to admit I have difficulty in recalling the occasion.  During the early stages of an innings I am renowned for being ‘outscored’ by the passage of overs.  Occasionally I buy some early credit by sneaking a boundary but not very often.  Over nearly twenty years I have accumulated many runs in the league but I shudder to think how long I have spent at the wicket making them!

I have to admit I do take great satisfaction in making certain opposition cricketers endure one of my more obstinate innings.  In addition to boring the pants off the opposition, my other roles are club captain and wicket keeper.
